Ballunar Liftoff Festival photo contest proves picture perfect Since its first flight in 1782, the hot air balloon has attracted the interest of people, and today there is no difference in the feeling of excitement and awe as they watch balloon aircraft propel through the air. The 2012 Ballunar Liftoff Festival, scheduled for Sept. 28-30, was canceled mid-afternoon on Sept. 29 after heavy rains saturated the festival grounds, preventing the hot air balloons from competing Saturday morning or setting up for the balloon glow at dusk on Saturday evening. A previous photo contest asked participants to submit photos of hot air balloons or other original images that celebrate mankind's interest in flight and discovery.
