New state reports also recognizes performance of four North Shore-LIJ cardiac surgeons, three cardiologists

Newly released state Department of Health (DOH) reports show Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center in New Hyde Park and North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset as having among New York State?s best outcomes for open-heart surgery and percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI). In fact, LIJ was the only hospital in the state to have significantly better outcomes for both cardiac surgery and PCI.
According to the DOH?s latest report on adult cardiac surgery (covering 2007-09), LIJ was one of only four hospitals in New York State ? and the only one on Long Island ? with risk-adjusted mortality rates that were significantly better than the statewide average for 676 patients undergoing surgeries to repair or replace heart valves and for those in need of surgeries for both valve/coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. In a separate category analyzing outcomes for CABG, valve or valve/CABG, LIJ and North Shore University Hospital were among six hospitals in the state ? and the only ones on Long Island ? that distinguished themselves for low, risk-adjusted mortality rates. Over the three-year period analyzed by the DOH, the combined volume of cardiac surgeries at North Shore University Hospital and LIJ Medical Center was 2,082 ? the most in the state.
In addition to the hospitals? top rankings, two LIJ heart surgeons,Robert Palazzo, MD, and S. Jacob Scheinerman, MD, and two North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) surgeons, Alan Hartman, MD, and Robert Kalimi, MD, were among 13 surgeons statewide to earn the DOH?s prestigious double-asterisk for their extraordinarily low mortality rates -- out of a total of about 190 surgeons at 40 hospitals who performed open-heart surgeries during that period. In fact, Dr. Palazzo performed 225 CABG surgeries over the three-year period covered in the DOH report without a single death.
In a separate DOH report on PCI, North Shore-LIJ?s Lenox Hill Hospital had the lowest risk-adjusted mortality rate in the state in 2009 for 2,940 patients undergoing angioplasty -- a procedure used to clear blocked heart arteries and increase blood flow. Over the three-year period covered in the report (2007-09), LIJ was one of six hospitals statewide that had statistically superior outcomes for angioplasty. In addition, NSUH was one of only three hospitals in New York ? and the only one on Long Island ? that had significantly better outcomes for 935 patients undergoing emergency angioplasty during those three years.
From an individual standpoint, Barry Kaplan, MD, of LIJ, and Loukas Boutis, MD, and Donna Marchant, MD, of NSUH were the only three cardiologists in New York State ? out of a total of more than 300 statewide who performed the procedure at 56 hospitals ? who were outliers for superior outcomes.
Since 2000, the DOH has released eight reports for angioplasty. LIJ has received double-star rankings for all cases in six of those reports, which is more than any other hospital in the state, according to Dr. Kaplan, the vice chair of cardiology at the North Shore-LIJ Health System.
In addition to LIJ being the only hospital in New York State to receive a double-asterisk for both cardiac surgery and angioplasty in the current DOH reports, NSUH was the only other hospital in the state to also have statistically superior outcomes in at least one category for both open-heart surgery and angioplasty.
?The state Department of Health?s annual analysis of cardiac outcomes in hospitals across New York has contributed to continuous improvements in the care delivered to New Yorkers with heart disease, which continues to be the number one cause of death in this state and in this country,? said said Stanley Katz, MD, senior vice president of cardiovascular services for the North Shore-LIJ Health System and chair of cardiology at North Shore University Hospital and LIJ Medical Center. ?The availability of these reports provides heart patients and their families with a valuable source of information that they can use to make informed decisions about their cardiac care.?
